ROME, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Italy’s Treasury is contemplating extending by six months tax breaks for company mergers it first launched to entice a purchaser for troubled state-owned financial institution Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) , two sources near the matter mentioned.

The scheme applies to all firms however it advantages principally banks and it’s a key plank of an incentive bundle the Treasury has tabled to promote MPS to stronger rival UniCredit .
